Think about your current pre-round routine. Do you grab a coffee, hit two or three balls at the driving range, stretch your arms across your chest for five seconds, and tee off? If so, you are leaving major yards on the table and risking a serious injury.
A static stretch (holding a stretch while sitting or standing still) actually relaxes your muscles, making them less explosive. Instead, golf fitness experts recommend a dynamic warm-up—moving your joints through their full range of motion. Here is a quick, 10-minute routine you can do right next to your golf cart.
The 10-Minute Golf-Ready Routine
Phase 1: Lower Body Activation (Minutes 1-4)
- Supported Deep Squats: Hold a golf club out in front of you on the ground for balance. Lower your hips down as far as comfortable, keeping your chest up. Do 10 reps. This opens up your hips and activates your quadriceps.
- Lateral Lunges: Step out wide to the right, bending your right knee while keeping your left leg straight. Push back to center and repeat on the left side. Do 8 reps per side. This prepares your legs for the lateral weight shift during your swing.
Phase 2: Upper Body & T-Spine Rotation (Minutes 5-8)
- Club Dislocates: Hold your golf club with a very wide grip in front of your thighs. Slowly bring the club up over your head and behind your back (if your flexibility allows), then return. Do 10 controlled reps to loosen tight shoulders.
- Torso Twists with Club: Place the club across your shoulders behind your neck. Stand in your golf posture and slowly rotate your torso back and through, mimicking your swing. Focus on moving from your mid-back, not your lower back. Do 15 reps.
Phase 3: Nervous System Fire-Up (Minutes 9-10)
- Practice Swings with Increasing Speed: Take 5 swings at 50% speed, 5 swings at 75% speed, and finally 3 swings at 100% speed. This tells your brain that it’s time to move fast.
Conclusion
Spending just 10 minutes performing these movements will completely change how you play your first three holes. Instead of using the first few holes as your warm-up, you’ll be primed to smash a massive drive straight down the middle on Hole 1.
